The performance of Syrah vine variety trained according to the Double Guyot and the Cordon Speronato trellising systems.

Abstract

The production of grapes from the Syrah vine variety was monitored for the 2007 and 2008 seasons. 1500 vines were trained according to the simple Cordon Speronato trellising system and another 1500 were trained according to the Double Guyot trellising system. Vines trained according to the Cordon Speronato trellising system produced 3850 kg of grapes in the first year and 4230 kg in the second year of production. Vines trained according to the Double Guyot trellising system produced 5150 kg of grapes in the first year and 5180 kg in the second year of production. This shows that after three years from planting, Syrah type vines trained according to the Double Guyot trellising system produce more grapes than those trained according to the simple Cordon Speronato system.
