Abstract: Background: The present global environment has become more crisis-prone than in the past few decades; the 21st century alone saw a surge in global terrorist attacks such as the 9/11 attack and the emergence of novel infectious diseases such as COVID-19. Both of these crises have impinged on the travel and tourism industry. This study aims at comparing the resultant effects of these crises on the Maltese market. Method: A quantitative approach was adopted utilising a self-designed online questionnaire distributed via email through UM Registrar’s mailing system to UM staff and students aged 18 years and over. Data was collected during the period of January 2021 and March 2021. Results: Two hundred and ten questions were filled in. Results show that there is a significant impact from terrorism and infectious disease on Maltese outbound travellers; however, there is no significant difference between the impacts on Maltese outbound travellers. Conclusion: This study shows that the cohort of participants do prioritise their health and safety risks. They consider the prevalence of a terrorist attack from occurring in the particular destination as well as, any current viral outbreaks in the particular destination country.
