Abstract: This study aimed at gaining an insight into the occupational health and safety measures that are taken in local fuel service stations in order to protect workers from occupational hazards and risks associated at their workplace. Local and European Union legislations have been reviewed in the light to find the requirements and obligations employers have to abide with to safeguard their employees' health and safety. To evaluate the compliance level on occupational health and safety matters the researcher compiled a questionnaire and carried out a face to face interview amongst all operators of fuel service stations in Malta. Following data collection and analysis the researcher was able to observe any trends in employer's awareness and knowledge about occupational health and safety, explore employer's attitudes towards the implementation of safety measures, and to identify the protective measures employers take for the benefit of employees health and safety. This study has concluded that the overall level of awareness among employers on occupational health and safety measures was generally poor and not in compliance with legal requirements. A number of recommendations have been proposed to improve level of occupational health and safety amongst these places of work.
