Abstract: In this study, emphasis has been laid on the identification of certain literary aspects which are relevant to teaching literature in secondary schools, and the adaptation of other ideas for evaluating children's books. The first part tackles briefly those criteria which are likely to be found in prose, as for the selection of textbooks aimed at stimulating children's needs for learning. The second part, by means of an objective questionnaire, gives a wider perspective of the current Maltese textbooks used in the state secondary system. The aim is to show how children respond to literature and its influence on their social development. The last part of this study presents ways in which literature can be studied and learned in the classroom. The approaches highlighted in this part are common to the teaching of literature, particularly at the secondary level. These approaches are offered here as an alternative or additional framework for teaching literature and for developing programs which offer more ways for children to respond to literature.
