The effect of fertiliser on the growth and production of tomato

Abstract

Many Maltese farmers wonder whether or not fertiliser really works and if it is economically feasible to spend so much money on fertiliser applications. This study focuses on the effect of fertiliser on the growth and production of tomato plants. One hundred tomato plants were planted in a greenhouse where fifty were given artificial fertiliser with the irrigation water together with foliar fertiliser, and fifty were only not. The average growth rate of the plants was monitored for 11 weeks. There was a significant difference between both treatments, where the growth rate and fruit setting in the fertilised plants was better that those plants without fertiliser.
