The phytochemical properties of plants from the Labiatae and Umbelliferae families

Abstract

General Description of the Project from Previous Literature Previous experiments like the ones carried out by the author were already carried out by other students for a short time. The extracts obtained from the previous experiments, and experiments carried out by the author, are still being analysed by the University of Malta. Thus results of the essential oils are still eagerly being waited. Investigations • Aims Essential oils are generally obtained by distillation. By doing these experiments, the author hopes that new useful constituents and medicinal properties are discovered. • Methodology The method carried out during the experiments was standard for all the plants. If any exceptions to the rule were done, these were all recorded and listed. • Results All the results obtained were very satisfactory. The essential oils of each plant were prior to further analysis to determine medicinal constituents. From the experiments that were carried out, some important and interesting information has been found out. From the two families studied, the Umbelliferae family has by far produced the most essential oils. From all the plants studied, F. corrununis out passed all with great ease to confirm that it is the plant that produced the most essential oils. Conclusions The overall aim of the experiments was to obtain essential oils from the plants being studied. And to the authors' greatest satisfaction, every experiment was carried out with success. Thus, one can say that the outcome of this project was very positive.
