| Abstract: | The maintenance and operation of High Voltage Systems is associated with a high degree of risk to workers. Studies in other countries have shown that a high incidence of accidents occurs as a result of not having an Electrical Safety Program, or not doing anything about the program that is in place. Better electrical safety training and attention to electrical hazards could prevent most of the electrically-related fatalities and injuries. A study was carried out, amongst MIA employees, by means of a questionnaire to analyse various work practices and the level of awareness of risk to occupational health and safety associated with HV systems. The results collected during the study indicate that in certain areas, with particular reference to HV maintenance, there is a lack of information, training and safety awareness. The operation and servicing of high voltage equipment in accordance with clearly defined rules and procedures should be entrusted only to persons who are technically competent and appropriately trained. Recommendations how to set a Training Plan amongst employees to address these issues have been given. |
