Abstract: The focus of this study is to try and explore the role of women in local councils. 16 years of continuous involvement in local councils has presented the author to ask why we need greater female participation at local level. What is keeping women from participating and being partners in decision-making at local level? Are female's councillors productive and contributing in their communities? Do mayors find any difference in their approach with female councillors, and is it related to their gender? Without doubt females have much to contribute especially in the case of direct contact with social problems, families, education as well as health. Females especially as mothers have had particular experience which can give them a wider view and better preparation in tackling such challenges. Positive action is needed in favour of all our residents of both sexes. Thus we need female participation to high light such issues as they have to be the principal promoters to bring forward and combat social exclusion. Throughout this mixed grounded study, we will focus and assess the importance of women in local councils. This will be done comparative by looking at other countries too. A qualitative and quantitative research focuses and illustrates the Maltese participation of 20 % female councillors in our communities. The findings indicate that all believe in female participation. Consequently women should move forward to be partners in the progressive role of Local Councils and as a permanent part of the government structure, as indicated by the Public Dialogue for a sustainable community. It was highlighted that councils with female participation made a positive difference in their communities. It is established that through a holistic national approach we should encourage the principle of full democracy. We must encourage and support women in acquiring the skills and knowledge and engage young women in decision-making and promote politics as a realizable career option. I hope this study provides an interesting subject and will be also interesting to you as much it was to me. Maybe one day you will feel the need to volunteer for your own Local Council.
