Launch of the Malta Module on the Transatlantic Periscope - 9 January 2026

The Malta Module of the Transatlantic Periscope, a collaboration between the Institute for European Studies and the Bertelsmann Foundation, was launched on Friday, 9 January 2026. The Transatlantic Periscope, hosted by the Bertelsmann Foundation, is an interactive and dynamic online tool that provides users with analyses, data visualisations, multimedia content and in-depth briefings to cultivate understanding of the relationship between the United States and each of the European Union’s 27 member countries and the United Kingdom.

The event was opened by Dr Moira Catania, Director of the Institute for European Studies. Courtney Flynn Martino, from the Bertelsmann Foundation, gave an overview of both the Foundation’s work and the Transatlantic Periscope. Dr Andre P. DeBattista and Stefan Bezzina gave an overview of the Malta Module of the Transatlantic Periscope, covering the platform, some of the methodologies used and the process behind the Maltese translation of the platform.

This was followed by an overview of Transatlantic Relations by Dr Valentina Cassar from the Department of International Relations, and a discussion on “Disinformation and Trust in the Media” by Prof. Carmen Sammut, Chairperson of the Board of the Institute for European Studies.

The module is available in both English and Maltese and is updated regularly, providing an ongoing snapshot of Malta-US relations.
