In June 2026, just weeks before assuming office as the 82nd Rector of the University of Malta on 1 July 2026, Professor Frank Bezzina, together with outgoing Rector Professor Alfred J. Vella, paid a courtesy visit to the Parliamentary Ombudsman, Judge Joseph Zammit McKeon.
Also present for the meeting was Chief Justice Emeritus Vincent De Gaetano, Commissioner for Education within the Office of the Ombudsman.
The meeting provided an opportunity to exchange views on higher education, good governance, and the role of educational institutions in addressing the evolving needs of society. Discussions also focused on the longstanding collaboration between the University of Malta and the Office of the Ombudsman in promoting fairness, accountability, and good administration within the tertiary education sector.
The participants also reflected on the rapidly changing educational landscape and the challenges and opportunities presented by technological advancements, including artificial intelligence.
The Parliamentary Ombudsman thanked Professor Vella for his dedicated service and valuable contribution to the University of Malta during his tenure as Rector. He also congratulated Professor Frank Bezzina on his appointment and wished him every success in his forthcoming term of office.
