Indirect Translation: A Two-Arched Bridge Across Cultures

The Department of Translation, Terminology and Interpreting Studies of the Faculty of Arts co-organised an international conference on ‘Indirect Translation: A Two-Arched Bridge Across Cultures’, in partnership with the Department of Theory of Translation and Comparative Linguistics of the National University of Uzbekistan and the Graduate Institute of Interpretation and Translation of Shanghai International Studies University.

Prof. Sergio Portelli coordinated the Organising Committee of the conference, which was held in Tashkent between 15 and 17 April.

The conference attracted 60 speakers from 18 countries, six of whom are academics of the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Education of the University of Malta.

The conference was an opportunity to discuss issues related to the translation of translations, especially when translation of texts between lesser-used languages requires an intermediate translation in a wider-used language such as English.

Participants also discussed intersemiotic indirect translation and indirect translation as a tool in foreign language teaching.
