Prof. Joel Azzopardi, Research Sub-Group Chair of the University Maritime Platform, is based in the Department of Artificial Intelligence within the Faculty of ICT, and his background is in artificial intelligence and information retrieval, with a keen interest in environmental and oceanographic data systems.
The growing volume of meteo-marine and environmental data calls for smarter tools to make sense of it, whether through AI-driven data quality checks, knowledge discovery from scientific literature, or decision support systems that turn raw observations into usable insight. Artificial intelligence also offers new ways to extract meaning from unstructured text, from marine heatwave catalogues buried in research papers to policy and legal documents relevant to ocean governance.
Bringing these AI capabilities to bear on marine and maritime challenges is an important step towards more informed, data driven decision making in a maritime nation context.
