Here’s what students told us:
🔌 At Home: Small Actions, Big Habits
- 77.5% already switch off lights and electronics when not in use — but many want to make this everyone’s habit.
- 90.8% turn off taps while brushing teeth — but only 37.5% consistently take shorter showers.
- 67.5% use energy-efficient appliances, yet just 42.5% always check energy ratings before buying new devices — a simple step that could have a big impact.
- 75.8% support smart home tech like smart meters, timers, and motion sensors to cut waste of resources.
- 73.3% are open to using renewable energy like solar — but cost is a key barrier.
🏫 At School & in the Community: Institutions Must Lead
- A striking 88.3% believe Maltese schools should lead by example with stronger energy-saving policies: think motion-sensor lights, water-saving taps, and solar panels on rooftops.
- Over 80% say current environmental education in Malta is insufficient — they want more: workshops, hands-on projects, and learning real-world solutions.
- 82.5% support eliminating single-use plastics and installing refill stations at school.
- 90% believe collective action is essential — but they want schools to create more structured, engaging opportunities like eco-clubs, energy-saving competitions, and green challenges.
🏛️ Government & Global Action: Policy Is Key
- 88.3% call for stronger government incentives — such as grants for solar panels, tax cuts for household water and energy efficiency, and subsidies for clean energy upgrades.
- Only 61.7% believe current national policies are effective — showing demand for stronger laws, better incentives, and more ambitious national action.
- 85% believe businesses, alongside schools and government, must prioritise sustainability.
- Students dream big: they want to triple the renewable energy use by 2030 and envision a future where homes, schools, and businesses are powered 100% by clean energy.
đź’ˇ What This Means
Students know that awareness alone is not enough – they want to be part of the solution. They are ready to make changes at home, challenge their schools to do more, and support ambitious government action for a cleaner, greener Malta.
