On 30 August 2025, the popular ‘Fonzu l-Fenek’ song reached two million plays on YT! The song was written and composed by Michael Piscopo and launched in 2013 as part of the Fonzu l-Fenek initiative by Prof. Suzanne Piscopo of the Faculty of Education at the UM.
The character of the loveable rabbit was created as a mascot promoting healthy eating and sustainable lifestyles for primary school children in Malta and Gozo. The goal was to transmit positive messages about nutrition, physical activity and respect for the natural environment among the younger generations through educational resources, books, school- and community-based educational projects, live appearances in schools and public events, and an active online presence.
Reflecting specifically on the power of music in education, Suzanne remarks that the Fonzu l-Fenek song undoubtedly contributed to Fonzu’s cross-generational popularity. “Wherever we go – in schools, local council events or other occasions – people of all ages know the song by heart (or at least the refrain) and are keen to sing along. It is a happy tune that brings joy to those who sing or listen to it, whilst passing on some important educational messages”, Suzanne said.
Other songs which are part of the 'Fonzu l-Fenek' initiative are Miċu l-Qattus, Lola n-Nannakola, Benna l-Baqra and Ħaxix u Frott, all of which include a multitude of educational concepts beyond healthy eating and sustainable lifestyles, including the wonder of science, respect for different cultures and the promotion of reading, especially in Maltese.
