Public Call: Share Your Memories of the 1972 Earthquake in Malta

Were you in Malta during the night of the 21–22 March 1972 earthquake? We are collecting first-hand accounts from members of the public who experienced this rare and impactful event. This initiative is part of a University of Malta research project by Geosciences student Sarah Camilleri that aims to revisit the earthquake from a scientific and social point of view.

While the earthquake caused no fatalities, it left a deep impression on the population, triggering mass evacuations and widespread public reaction. Given its historical importance, more research can be carried out, particularly on how it was felt and remembered by those who lived through it.

If you remember this event, please fill in this questionnaire. It will help us to:
-Better understand the intensity and impact of the earthquake across different areas;
-Compare public experience with scientific data;
-Preserve a piece of Malta’s seismic history.

The questionnaire is short and anonymous, and is open to anyone who was in Malta at the time of the event. You can access it online. If you need help filling in the form, you can call: 23406189

This project is supervised by Dr Matthew Agius, Lecturer at the Department of Geosciences.
