Call for UM Research Excellence Funds

Applications are being accepted for the University of Malta's Research Excellence Funds to be disbursed in Calendar years 2027-2028. They are intended to support Council-appointed Resident Academics with TR4 status and higher in carrying out their research and act as a springboard to obtain additional funding from other local and foreign sources.

Funding Details:
A maximum of five projects will be funded in each of the following thematic areas, with up to EUR 60,000 awarded per project:

  • Natural Sciences and Knowledge Sciences
  • Engineering, ICT and Built Environment
  • Medical and Health Sciences
  • Arts and Humanities
  • Social Sciences and Education

Evaluation Criteria and Thresholds:
Kindly note that minimum thresholds for each evaluation criterion shall be applicable as follows:

> Excellence: Min. 35 out of 50 marks
> Impact: Min. 15 out of 25 marks
> Implementation: Min. 15 out of 25 marks
> Total: Min. 65 out of 100 marks

Each application is evaluated by different external evaluators. Although these thresholds are applied on each evaluation individually, the prevailing score is the one derived from the average of all evaluations.

All submission requirements and instructions are outlined on the webpage. The Google Form needs to be accessed only for submission purposes.

Deadline:
Submit your application form online through the Google Form by Friday 27 February 2026.

Late applications will not be accepted.
