China Presentation on Popular Education

On Friday 17 October, Prof. Peter Mayo delivered a talk at a symposium on Rural Education at Chengdu University, China. The talk was titled: Popular Rural Education: Past and Present. It covered the vast expanse of this field throughout history. This ranged from the Anarchist and Republican driven activities in the cultural (Federico Garcia Lorca , Eduardo Ugarte etc) and education ( José Castelejo) missions in the predominantly rural economy areas of 'Segunda Republica' España to similar challenges in Latin America and the Caribbean later with educación popular in the Christian base comunities (CEBs) and beyond. 

This includes revolutionary settings in Nicaragua (Sandinisra revolution and Fernando Cardenal) and Grenada( New Jewel Movement) in the early 80s  and the Illich-inspired network of learning webs in Chiapas (Frente Zapatista inspired) from the mid 90s onward.
