International engagements for Professor Carmel Borg

Prof. Carmel Borg of the Faculty of Education has recently returned from two consecutive international academic engagements, contributing to professional development initiatives in Albania and Greece.

His first visit took him to Korce, Albania, where he delivered a series of sessions on quality assurance in post-secondary education, at Preca College, encouraging participants to rethink assessment practices beyond traditional grading systems and the pursuit of high marks.

His presentations explored how quality assurance can foster deeper learning, critical thinking, authentic assessment, and meaningful student engagement, while promoting educational cultures centred on continuous improvement rather than narrow measures of performance.

Prof. Borg's second engagement was at the University of Patras, Greece, where he contributed to an international Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) bringing together students and academics from six European universities.

His teaching focused on transformative education, examining the role of education in promoting critical reflection, democratic participation, social justice, and active citizenship.

Through interactive seminars and dialogue-based learning activities, participants explored how education can empower individuals and communities to respond creatively and ethically to contemporary social, cultural, and environmental challenges.

Among other international commitments, Prof. Carmel Borg will return to Greece this autumn as a visiting academic at the University of the Aegean (Rhodes Campus), where he will deliver a series of seminars for postgraduate students and academics.

His sessions will explore the interconnected themes of critical literacy, democracy, and social justice, examining the role of education in fostering critical inquiry, democratic participation, and more inclusive and equitable societies.
