Malta's Industrial Heritage presented at International Conferences

Prof. Robert Ghirlando from the Department of Mechanical Engineering within UM's Faculty of Engineering recently attended a Conference on Industrial Heritage organised by the Associazione Italiana per il Patrimonio Archeologico Industriale (AIPAI) in Bari and Matera, Italy, where he participated in a panel discussion to set up a Mediterranean Network for Industrial Heritage, during which he made a presentation about Industrial Heritage in Malta.

Last August, Prof. Ghirlando attended the Congress of The International Committee for the Conservation of Industrial Heritage (TICCIH) in Kiruna, Sweden, where he presented the National Report for Malta. He joined TICCIH in 2012 after organising a tour in Malta for the Society of Industrial Archaeology (USA).

And last October, he participated in a conference in Rijeka (Croatia) on Industrial Heritage of Ports and Docks on Seas, Rivers, Lakes and Canals, where he presented the Industrial Heritage of Malta’s Grand Harbour.

What is impressive about these conferences is the amount of work being carried practically everywhere to conserve industrial heritage.

Prof. Ghirlando is a Senior Fellow in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and chairman of the Industrial Heritage Platform of UM. He is also a member of AIPAI and TICCIH and secretary of the Malta Industrial Heritage Association.
