The University of Malta (UM) has unveiled The Campus Compass; a vibrant, 4-metre-tall landmark celebrating the cultural richness and diversity of its student community.
Officially inaugurated on 15 October 2025, the striking installation stands proudly near the Main Library Terrace at the Tal-Qroqq Campus, serving as a lasting symbol of unity and inclusion.
A collaborative initiative between the International Students Association (ISA), the History of Art Students Association (HOASA), and Vuċi Kollettiva, The Campus Compass is a symbol of unity and diversity.
Designed, built, and painted by students with the support of multiple UM faculties and departments, the installation features 19 double-sided signposts representing the university’s most populous student nationalities, 40 double-sided hand-painted medallions for other nationalities, ensuring that every nationality on campus is represented, and one representing stateless students.
Originally proposed by ISA in February 2025, the project gained enthusiastic backing from university administration, including the Secretary of the Council, the University Architect, the International Office, and the Marketing, Communications and Alumni Office.
HOASA led the artistic design of the structure, while members of the Faculty of Engineering, provided technical expertise and support. Crucial logistical support was provided by the Estates, Facilities and Capital Development Directorate.
Student workshops, initially held at the NSTS English Language Institute and later at the UM Art Studio, brought students together to paint the signs and medallions. International students were especially encouraged to take part, ensuring authentic representation and cultural accuracy in every design.
Financial support for The Campus Compass came from Erasmus+ project funds managed by the International Office.
"At present, we have over 120 nationalities represented among both students and staff within the University community. We have more than 2,000 students", said Ms Stefania Agius Fabri, Director of the International Office at UM.
Its inauguration coincides with the 25th anniversary of the University of Malta’s participation in the Erasmus+ Programme and the celebration of Erasmus+ Days 2025, highlighting UM’s continued commitment to internationalisation, inclusion, and global learning exchange.
“The Campus Compass is more than a structure; it’s a celebration of who we are as a community,” said Mr Kris Bajada, President of Vuċi Kollettiva. “It reminds us that no matter where we come from, we all have a place here.”
“Internationalisation remains a strategic priority for our university. By fostering global partnerships and attracting talented students from around the world, we strengthen the quality, diversity, and impact of our academic community”, said UM Rector, Prof. Alfred J. Vella.
