The University of Malta attaches great importance to welcoming new international students.
Every year in September, the International Office organises orientation sessions for new international students who enrol at the university. These sessions aim to cater to the diverse groups of students, helping them acclimatise to their new environment and providing necessary information for their academic and social integration.
During these sessions, various student organisations and UM support services are invited to deliver a short presentation and to introduce their work and promote their events and activities to the students.
The number of international students joining the UM increases every year. These past weeks, the University of Malta welcomed 405 visiting students from various programmes, who will be here for a period of one semester or a full year. A good percentage of the 1343 international students accepted for full programmes have arrived and enrolled, with more students expected to arrive in the coming days.
This year, the commitment to connect more with the international students led to the organisation of additional activities beyond the traditional Orientation Day. Two of these activities included a Speed Friending event that the International Office organised in collaboration with the UM Library, and a Sports event with the Institute for Physical Education and Sports.
These events would not have been possible without their help. The International Office also provided support for the highly attended Welcome Barbeque for Freshers organised by the Chaplaincy. Students not only enjoyed themselves but also forged new friendships.
The International Office will organise and host several events over the coming months in collaboration with different student organisations and other Offices and academic units of the University, aiming to foster a sense of community and belonging among international students and help them forge friendships and extend their network with local students.
If you have an event to propose, please get in touch via email.
Another orientation session for full-time students who missed the first session will be held on 21 October 2025. More information can be found online.
