UM Physical Education students commended for their invaluable input in success of Exercise Snacks initiative

Twelve offices across the University of Malta recently completed a pilot initiative centered on "exercise snacks": short, 5–10 minute bursts of physical activity designed to combat sedentary behaviour and boost energy within busy academic and professional routines.

The initiative was a joint initiative by the Office for Human Resources Management & Development and the Institute for Physical Education & Sport (IPES). It was led by trained UM Movement Activators from IPES (enrolled in the B.Sc in Sport & Physical Activity) under the supervision of Professor Andrew Decelis, Rector’s Delegate for Sport & Physical Activity, and Associate Professor within the same Institute.

Turning Transitions into Training

The initiative encouraged staff to reframe everyday moments such as walking between meetings, climbing stairs, or desk-based intervals into opportunities for health. Professor Decelis emphasised that these "snacks" support both physical wellbeing and mental focus without the need for specialized equipment or extra time.

Celebrating the Movement Activators

On Tuesday 12 May 2026, the participating Movement Activators ,were formally recognised for their pivotal role in the pilot’s success.  Each student received a certificate of appreciation for their dedication promoting a more active university culture and for providing staff with practical tools to use on campus or at home.

"The biggest health gains come from moving from no activity to some activity," Professor Decelis noted. "Small bursts of movement can meaningfully improve cardiovascular health, energy levels, and cognitive focus."

The Next Phase

The positive reception of the pilot has secured the initiative's future. Plans for a wider rollout across the University of Malta will be announced internally to staff shortly.
