UM’s AI students put their robots to the test in maze-solving competition

Students from the Department of Artificial Intelligence at the Faculty of ICT recently showcased their robotics and programming skills in an exciting maze-solving competition held in the ICT Foyer on Level 1.

The event, which took place on 28 May from 10:00 onwards, formed part of the Robotics study-unit undertaken by second-year AI students and coordinated by Dr Ingrid Galea.

The competition challenged participants to design and program autonomous robots capable of navigating a maze from start to finish in the shortest possible time.

A total of nine robots competed throughout the morning, with each team given a maximum of 15 minutes to complete the course. Spectators gathered to watch as the robots analysed their surroundings, made navigation decisions, and attempted to find the fastest route through the maze.

The event was also attended by the Dean of the Faculty of ICT, Prof. Ing. Carl James Debono, and the Head of the Department of Artificial Intelligence, Prof. Matthew Montebello.

The competition highlighted the practical application of artificial intelligence, robotics, and autonomous systems, giving students the opportunity to demonstrate the knowledge and skills acquired during their studies in a real-world challenge.

At the end of the event, the winning teams were recognised for their outstanding performance and presented with prizes. Thanks are extended to JC Events for supporting the event with catering, and to A to Z Electronics for providing prizes for the winning team.

The Department of Artificial Intelligence extends its congratulations to all participating students for their creativity, innovation, and dedication, which contributed to the success of this engaging and educational event.
