Event: Safer Roads, Safer Lives: Implementing the Safe System Approach in Malta
Date: Thursday 23 October 2025
Time: 09:30-11:30
Venue: Main Library, Periodicals Department
A panel discussion addressing Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Target 3.6)
The Office of the Pro-Rector for Strategic Planning and Sustainability at the University of Malta, in collaboration with Dr Thérèse Bajada, Senior Lecturer at the Institute for Climate Change and Sustainable Development, will be hosting a panel discussion about the Safe System Approach for Road Safety.
“Safer Roads, Safer Lives” is the driving principle behind efforts to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Target 3.6, which aims to halve global road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030, and SDG 11.2, focused on providing safe and sustainable transport systems. This global commitment is supported by the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 and its associated Global Plan, which guides governments in reducing fatalities by improving road infrastructure, vehicle safety, and user behaviour.
The discussion will take place on Thursday 23 October between 09:30 and 11:30 at the Main Library, Periodicals Department.
The aim of the discussion is to raise awareness about road safety. It examines what can be applied to the local context despite several challenges. Road safety is a cornerstone of sustainable mobility: safer streets encourage active mobility. However, a collective responsibility and commitment towards making road safety a national priority is necessary.
Panel discussants include:
Dr Jonathan Joslin, Emergency Department from Mater Dei
Dr Jeannette Axisa from Transport Malta
Mr Adrian Galea from the Malta Insurance Association
Dr Simon Micallef, from Doctors for Road Safety
This event is open to all staff, students and the general public. We look forward to your participation. Please register through the online form. Attendance is free but we do have a limited seating capacity.
