Performing Arts Encounters (Public Lecture Series) - Dr Maria Kapsali (University of Leeds UK)

Event: Performing Arts Encounters (Public Lecture Series) - Dr Maria Kapsali (University of Leeds UK)

Date: Thursday 19 February 2026

Time: 18:00-19:30

Venue: Gateway Building, Lecture Hall A, UM Msida Campus

Are you working in dance, music, or theatre? Does your work involve transensorial elements, such as rhythm, direction and movement? Have you felt that your practice or research goes beyond existing disciplinary denominations and institutional demarcations between artforms?

Taking as a starting point the development and use of echome, i.e. a wearable technology for sound and movement interaction, this lecture will investigate the way sound and movement, dance and music, can be explored through a joint pedagogy.

With reference to a wide spectrum of research fields including Digital Music Instruments, Digital Performance, Sound Art, Video Games and Movement Sonification, Kinesonic Practice will be proposed as a creative and pedagogical approach for working with sound and movement in research, artistic and community settings. It will be argued that the development of interactive technologies offers an opportunity not only to question existing, and in some cases artificial, boundaries between artforms, but also to consider the bodies and persons that can access and create knowledge within these practices.

The lecture is open to all; no registration required.
