Event: Webinar and Book Launch: Overtourism in Cities and Small Islands

Date: Wednesday 29 April 2026

Time: 18:00 - 19:00

Venue: Online via Zoom

The Islands and Small States Institute (ISSI) of the University of Malta will be holding a webinar to discuss the global crisis of overtourism and to launch the book titled “Overtourism in Cities and Small Islands”.

The event will be held on Zoom and take place on Wednesday, 29th April 2026, between 18:00 and 19:00 CET. Participation requires online registration.

As is well known, unchecked tourism inflows can degrade the quality of life of the host community through, amongst other things, gentrification, cultural commodification, and political agendas that prioritise profits and economic growth before sustainability. Potential solutions, in this regard, include smart technology to manage overcrowding, stakeholder cooperation and community activism. Addressing overtourism therefore involves navigating between economic necessity, social wellbeing and environmental survival.

These issues will be discussed during this one-hour webinar, which will consist of short presentations by selected speakers and comments/questions by members of the audience.

The event will be hosted by Prof. Stefano Moncada, Director of the ISSI, and is being organised by Prof. Lino Briguglio, former Director and Senior Fellow at the Institute.
