Every drop counts! Reducing Plastic & Reusing Water

SCP leader:                          Ms Francesca Scerri & Ms Mariella Camilleri

Participating school:      Laura Vicuna School, Ghasri – Gozo

Students’ Age:                    5-10 years

Project time frame:          Project Year 1

  • Research question: What was the research question? What are the underlying regional problems?
  1. How much water does our school waste?
  2. How can we conserve water more efficiently?
  • Approach: How did you proceed?

As part of the Eco-Schools actions the school decided to focus on water conservation. Students explained what they were doing and parents willingly collaborated by providing empty detergent containers. With the support of the school handyman and adult staff, the learners transformed the containers into re-usable bucket by painting the re-usable buckets. The buckets were placed under the pipes of air conditioners and collected the water. The water was then used to water the plants. Also the cleaners used the buckets and water for cleaning purposes. Parents were also encouraged to use these practices to conserve water.

  • Solution: What are your findings?

Approximately two small buckets of water were collected (saved) per day.

  • Recommendation: What solutions have you developed for the regional problem(s)?

We take water consumption for granted. This project also raised awareness that there are simple ways that one can adopt to make use of every single droplet of water.

  • Dissemination: How did you promote your recommendations?

Our ideas were posted on our Facebook page and parents were encouraged to do the same at home. During this project we managed to re-use plastic and reduce water waste.
