Improving the environment in our community

SCP leader:                          Ms Anita Muscat

Participating school:      St Theresa School, Kerċem, Gozo

Students’ Age:                    5-11 years

Project time frame:          Project Year 1

  • Research question: What was the research question? What are the underlying regional problems?
  1. What is the environmental impact of waste in our community?
  2. How can we reduce waste in our community?
  3. How can we embellish our community?

The project aims to:

  • sensitize students about the waste problem in the community of Kerċem
  • support the Kerċem Local Council in efforts to embellish the community
  • propose specific actions to improve the quality of the environment
  • Approach: How did you proceed?

The project started with a school-wide awareness campaign about the negative impact of waste on the community. This was supported by regular meetings of the EkoSkola Committee with the Kerċem Local Council. The EkoSkola Committee also had meetings with the Bishop and the Minister for Gozo about their concerns about the quality of the environment.

The project culminated with an onsite visit to the Għadira ta’ San Raflu at Kerċem during which the students conducted a clean-up of the area.

  • Solution: What are your findings?

As a follow up to the clean-up, students submitted a proposal to the Local Council to embellish that area and make it more accessible and attractive for visitors.

  • Recommendation: What solutions have you developed for the regional problem(s)?

The Kerċem Local Council accepted the students’ proposal and applied for (and received) funds from the EU to carry out the embellishment project. The application was supported by the Ministry for Gozo.

  • Dissemination: How did you promote your recommendations?

The Local Council promoted this project (and other EkoSkola initiatives) on their social media networks. The project also featured in the Ministry for Gozo’s Facebook page.
