SCP leader:                          Ms Francesca Scerri

Participating school:      Laura Vicuna School, Ghasri – Gozo

Students’ Age:                    5-10 years

Project time frame:          Project Year 1

  • Research question: What was the research question? What are the underlying regional problems?
  1. What are the characteristics of the carob tree?
  2. What are the traditions related to the carob tree?
  3. What are the benefits that can be obtained from the carob tree?
  • Approach: How did you proceed?

This project adopted a whole school approach involving all the classes and their respective families. Various aspects of the theme were explored depending on the age of the students. During the project, students learned to: (i) identify the tree and recognize its parts (i.e. leaves, flowers, fruit); (ii) participated in quizzes; (iii) shared the information obtained from their parents and relatives about the uses of the carob tree; (iv) learned recipes about using the carob and cooked them (i.e. cough syrup and cake). The products were then distributed among the students.

  • Solution: What are your findings?

The carob tree has, over the years, served as a food source for humans and their livestock alike. Traditionally our ancestors made diverse use of carob seeds and fruits. The carob has various health benefits.

  • Recommendation: What solutions have you developed for the regional problem(s)?

Nature can provide a valuable educational resource that integrates various aspects of the curriculum. Families showed a high degree of interest in the theme.

  • Dissemination: How did you promote your recommendations?

The students’ parents were involved throughout the duration of the project. Some parents contributed their knowhow to the project while others learned about the carob tree from their children’s actions.
