Book Launch

Book Launch

A launch was held last week by the Department of Disability Studies of the book, recently published by Prof. Anne-Marie Callus, titled Kith and Kin and the Lived Experience of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities. Through an in-depth discussion of specific encounters and experiences of persons with intellectual disabilities, the book considers the ways in which their lives are closely interconnected with those of the persons around them. The instances considered are taken from research, auto/biographical accounts and other types of texts. Various life domains are covered, such as education, employment, creative work, socialising and family life.

The event was moderated by Dr Amy Camilleri Zahra, Head of the Department of Disability Studies. Following the opening address by Dr Sandra Scicluna, Dean of the Faculty for Social Wellbeing, speeches were delivered by Prof. Eva Kittay, Distinguished Professor at Stony Brook University in New York and by Dr Kurt Borg, Senior Lecturer at Department of Policy, Politics and Governance in FEMA. There was also a testimonial by Denise Camilleri and her mother Liliana.

The short format of the chapters in the main part of the book makes it suitable for academic purposes as well as making it accessible for advocates and practitioners working with persons with intellectual disability. The book is published by Routledge and is available through leading online bookshops.

You can order this book online.
