Centre for Labour Studies Research Conference

The Centre for Labour Studies (CLS) is proud to announce a free public online event detailing the findings of original research produced by CLS academics and students. The CLS produces a great deal of research and the aim of this conference is to make the findings of some of this research more visible. The conference also aims to provide CLS students, alumni, researchers, academics, and others who are interested in the world of work and related topics with a forum in which to discuss this important topic.

Academics will present original findings about the world of work in Malta. A talk by Mr Melchior Vella will detail the findings of a research project (carried out in combination with Mr Gilmour Camilleri) funded by the CLS that analysed how poverty in Malta has changed over the years and factors that may have influenced this. A presentation by Dr Anna Borg will chart the presence and evolution of women in the Maltese labour market between 1960 and 2020. Dr Manwel Debono will present findings from a study (written with Dr Mario Thomas Vassallo) that investigated the working conditions experienced by Filipinos in Malta, the largest group of migrants from outside Europe. Finally, Dr Luke Fiorini will present findings from a study of IT, iGaming and telecommunication workers which studied how the sudden switch to remote working during the COVID-19 pandemic impacted upon their health, and the factors that influenced this. Further information on these academics and an abstract of their presentation can be found on the ‘Speakers’ section of this website.

Following this, two concurrent sessions will be held were recent students of the Bachelor in Work and Human Resources (Hons) and the Bachelor in Occupational Health and Safety (Hons) will present findings from their thesis. Further information about these student presentations can be found on the conference programme.
