| Abstract: | Of the numerous sacred relics possessed by the Knights Hospitaller of St. John of Jerusalem in their Conventual Church in Malta the one most venerated was, undoubtedly, that of the Right Hand of John the Baptist which they had brought with them to Malta after the fall of Rhodes. Ferdinand von Hompesch, last Grand Master to rule in Malta, was allowed to carry it away with him after the capture of Malta by the French, however, he was only allowed to take the " carrion", as Napoleon Bonaparte impiously called the sacred relic; the precious gold reliquary having been melted down together with the many other treasures of the Order. |
