Abstract: Records of infant mortality rate in the Maltese Islands go back to 1896. They show that until 1943 this mortality was very high. It fluctuated between 190 and 310 deaths per 1,000 live-births; and in 1943, when aerial bombardments were heavy and food supplies were very scarce, infant mortality rate rose to 345.2. But when bombardments ceased, food became abundant and sulphonamides were introduced into paediatric practice, infant mortality rate fell rapidly, and this fall was maintained in the following years (Diagram I). In 1961 there were 31.4 deaths per 1,000 live-births, but in 1962 there were 35.
