Abstract: Science today offers greater promise for finding new treatments than ever before, thanks to new knowledge and new technologies. Today, European citizens can expect to live up to 30 years longer than they did a century ago. Huge reductions in mortality (e.g. in HIV/AIDS, many cancers or cardiovascular disease) and significant progress in the quality of life are the results of some large and many small steps in biopharmaceutical research. The key contribution of the research-based pharmaceutical industry to medical progress is to turn fundamental research into innovative treatments that are widely available and accessible to patients. European citizens can expect not only to live longer, but to live longer and healthier lives. PRIMA’s primary mission is to promote pharmaceutical discovery and development in Malta and to bring to the market medicinal products in order to improve human health.
