Abstract: | Several studies have shown that the overexpression of sirtuins is associated with increased maximum lifespan in various model organisms, like the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Mammalian sirtuins were found to share homology with the yeast Sir2, causing gerontologists worldwide to wonder whether sirtuins could also influence ageing in humans. Increasing evidence suggests that sirtuins are implicated in cancer and metabolic, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. |
