| Abstract: | Malta, being a small island with limited natural resources was spared from many a famine thanks to help from larger nations such as Sicily, Spain, France and the city state of Venice. However, in the middle of the 17th century, there was a famine outbreak. The Knights of Malta tried and successfully overcame this famine through negotiating and the diplomatic help of Mgr. Anthony Pignatelli (later, Pope Innocent XII), in his twofold function of Inquisitor and Apostolic Delegate for the Maltese Islands. |
