Abstract: An account of the January 1693 earthquake. On Friday 9th at about 10 o’clock at night a first tremor was felt. It was relatively mild and does not seem to have inflicted perceivable damage in these Islands. Barely forty hours later, namely on Sunday 11th during mid-afternoon a second and truly devastating earthquake shook violently the Maltese Islands for a few interminable minutes. No victims were recorded but the population was terror stricken. The Grandmaster commissioned resident chief engineer of the Order of St John Mederico Blondel to commission a report on the damage that Gozo sustained during the quake.
