Abstract: In this article, the author examines a Maltese tradition known as 'Il-Hanzira ta' l-Erwieh'. This was a charitable tradition where a few weeks prior to All Souls Day, one of the residents from the wealthier towns would buy a pig, tie a bell around its neck and release it in the neighborhood. As people would hear the pig approach from inside their homes, they would go out and feed it. On All Souls Day the pig would be captured and slaughtered and the meat would be shared with the poor.
