Abstract: The Nigger of the Narcissus has an unfortunate title, but it must be borne in mind that the term 'nigger' was not such an emotive one at the time Conrad was writing, and that he was using it descriptively and symbolically, and not insultingly. If that obstacle can be surmounted, the novel can be seen not only as an exciting tale of the sea,but also as a significant new portent in the history of English fiction, and as crucial in Conrad's own development.
