| Abstract: | This study explores the role of recent virtual reality (VR) technologies in the field of illustration, specifically in relation to books. By analysing previous works in VR storytelling, current trends in 3D art styles, as well as the practice of character and environment design, it investigates the immersive relationship between characters, virtual environments, animation, sound and text, with the aim of creating an immersive book reading experience that enhances a reader’s engagement with a story, through the medium of virtual reality. Upon testing the effectiveness of this project through a focus group, this study concludes that the use of VR can be very beneficial in enhancing the experience of reading. However, this project explores only one of several methods of creating an immersive reading experience and therefore, further developments will certainly be possible in the future, especially as input devices – which enhance the user’s interaction with virtual spaces – continue to evolve. |
