Abstract: | This Dissertation aims to look at the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, one of the greatest authors of the twentieth century, to examine the manner in which literature and theology can enlighten on a personal quest for God. It will analyse the theological aspects giving special attention to the creation story and man’s responsibility as a co-creator. It will start by contextualising the novelist and explore other authors, who have influenced him in creating this imaginary world. It seeks to investigate how Tolkien’s work offers inspiration for those looking for the truth. Although Tolkien’s works have little or no mention of religion, nevertheless its use of imagination and fantasy is very effective. This dissertation shall try to demonstrate Tolkien’s greatness through, a careful analysis of his terminology that reflects Christian theological ideas such as, amongst others, creation, divine providence, filiation and sanctity, and Tolkien’s use of the grotesque images, paradox and riddles, to reveal a truth. An in-depth study of Tolkien’s main works aims to identify a pedagogy that may help in one’s search for the mystery of life by using current articles available on the social media and related studies. Christian imagination facilitates anyone to touch that which is beautiful and transcendent. Tolkien allowed his readers to experience meaning for one’s interior thoughts and closeness to the Christian faith. |
