Reinterpreting colour-field and landscape artworks : an investigation in multi-disciplinary ways of creating and experiencing colour and sculpture

Abstract

This research explores and investigates whether landscape and colour-field artworks could be reinterpreted effectively through the use of digital stereoscopic painting, video, projection and printing methods in an attempt to enhance illusions of depth and flatness. This is done through the study of various fields of knowledge primarily neurology, stereography, cartography, landscape and colour theory. The study focuses on bringing these areas together in an attempt to successfully create chromostereoscopic colour-field artworks which reinterpret a specific landscape and can be viewed in three-dimensions when viewed with appropriated 3D glasses. Another priority is to place this research in the contemporary art context by studying the implications of experiencing abstract landscape reinterpretations in today‘s modern society. Specific methods are studied and developed by merging together stereoscopic technology and digital painting techniques. This research shows that chromostereoscopic colour-fields could be used to create optical illusions which reinterpret the three-dimensional qualities of topographic landscapes.
