Abstract: A recently rediscovered miniature bust of Jean de Valette, Grand Master of the Order of the Knights of St John, made of silver and gilt bronze, is here attributed to the Florentine sculptor Giovanni Bandini. It was probably commissioned to commemorate Valette’s defence of Malta against the Turks in 1565. The sculpture is a work of the highest quality and the finest known portrait of this celebrated figure, possessing exceptional monumentality and presence for such a small object. An attribution is here proposed to the Florentine sculptor Giovanni Bandini (Giovanni dell’Opera; 1539/40–99).
