Abstract: This article is a critical study by Joseph Ciappara on Maltese poets who are pessimistic. The author here divides the pessimistic poet into two categories: the philosophical and intellectual pessimistic poet and the poet with a temperamental pessimism. According to Ciappara all Maltese pessimistic poets, being Christians, fall under the latter category, that is they write in a temperamental pessimistic way. Among these Maltese poets, the author mentions Karmenu Vassallo, Ruzar Briffa, Marcell Mizzi and Gorg PIsani. With reference to some of their poems, Ciappara compares them to other poems from non-Maltese pessimistic poets such as Charles Baudelaire, Francis Thompson, Giacomo Leopardi and Francois Villon
