Abstract: This paper defines drug and alcohol prevention, examines how prevention strategies may be applied within a school setting and determines the extent to which current, school-based programmes follow the ideal characteristics of such interventions. It also identifies some of the obstacles encountered when attempting to implement prevention programmes in schools and offers suggestions for overcoming such difficulties.
