| Abstract: | Cardiac catheterisation is performed with increasing frequency to perform therapeutic manoeuvres. These either replace surgery or are complementary to it. The first interventional procedure in paediatrics was the creation of an atrial septal defect in a baby with transposition of the great arteries by William Rashkind in 1966. This procedure revolutionised diagnostic cardiac catheterisation and also gave the opportunity for patients with transposition of the great arteries to live sufficiently long to have a surgical operation at a later date. |
