Abstract: The first heart surgery that was performed in Malta dates back to a century ago. Young English soldier Robert Hugh Martin went under the knife as a result of a gun shot wound to the chest in Thessaloniki, Greece. He was then carried onto a ship and arrived to Malta on the 13th of January, 1918. Sir Alfred Ballance was the surgeon who permed the operation and, although it was a success, Martin later died on the 14th of March due to an infection. The soldier was buried in the cemetery of Pieta, Malta.
