A visual project on Rembrandt’s etchings : utilizing his technique to transform the contemporary Maltese landscape into pen and ink

Abstract

This thesis incorporates a project which revolves around the title: ´A visual project on Rembrandt`s etchings`. This treats the idea of studying the etchings by Rembrandt with the intention of producing copies done by this master. The main theme chosen for these etchings was the landscapes. The process of copying Rembrandt`s etchings will not be produced in the Master's manner but will be conveyed by the use of pen and ink. Thus the work will not follow the same approach which the artist tackled. In order to satisfy the number of details and the technique he used and to attempt to achieve the precision which he applied in his etchings the grid technique will be applied. Moreover the idea of tackling the local landscapes evolved with the current issues of over development which is contrasting Rembrandt’s depiction of the beauty of nature. Eventually this series of replicas in pen and ink, would then serve as a preparatory introduction to the final project. In other words these copies serve as the inspiration to produce a final work. The outcome of the final work will be based on the same medium used for the copies and eventually this would lead to the original final work based on the Maltese scenario together with the present environmental problems. The pen and ink drawings amounted to a small set of five made on a small scale to resemble Rembrandt’s etchings which were also produced on a small dimension.
