Abstract: Four surveys concerned with heavy metal pollution were carried out during July, November 1980 and July, September 1981 in Haifa Bay. Observations were made at a number of stations at four depths on the occurrence of various species of molluscs and their environment (type of sediment, temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen and salinity of the water) at each site. General conclusions are drawn on the distribution of the species at these depths. Arcularia gibbosula proved to be the most abundant living species in the bay as well as a suitable indicator for mercury pollution.
