Abstract: This documents follows the path of a German priest thought to be named Abbate Bettz who visited Malta in the 18th century to conduct research on Maltese fossils as well as giving a lecture on the same subject. Following a series of inquiries to archives in Germany, it was later found that his real name was Professor Joseph Petzl (full name: Joseph Ritter von Petzl, 1764-1817). According to various manuscripts, he traversed the Maltese islands in search of fossils that would contribute to his research.
